Charleton Golf Course © 2006 Richard & Mary-Alice Jafolla Charleton Golf Course's main claim to fame is that former President Bush (George the First) played here. In fact, there is a photograph of Mr. President prominently displayed. They probably would have displayed it in the clubhouse if they had one, but they don't! They do have just about everything else--a 9 hole pitch and putt, a driving range, and an 18 hole golf course. But no clubhouse. If you want to use any of the facilities you pay the bartender in the combination bar/restaurant/pro shop/clubhouse. It's an unusual set-up but it works for them.
Charleton Golf Course is a hilly, parkland course with some stunning views of the Firth of Forth. It's a "pay and play" golf course, which means it's open to the public. Be prepared for walking up and down some steep hills, though. Of course you can always rent a trolley ("pull carts" in the USA) or a battery-driven trolley. And at Charleton Golf Course you can even rent a buggy ("golf carts" in the USA). Not too many golf courses in Great Britain rent buggies and I was surprised to see this one did. But then maybe the members don't want to traipse up and down those steep hills for four hours. With all of the options--driving range, 9 hole chip and putt, and a full 18 hole course--Charleton Golf Course seems a good choice for the golfer. It's beautifully located among the rolling hills and the restaurant serves good food and drink all day long. You can come to practice or play or just to eat. On the last day we were in this area I had a choice of playing this course or Leven Links. I chose Leven. Afterwards we drove up to see Charleton Golf Course and I'm sorry I did not get a chance to play it. It looked like a good test of golf with a beautiful finishing hole. And even if it weren't such a good course, with all those hills it would have been a good aerobic workout! For sure I will play it next time--especially since the price is right!
